Victory is sweet
Certain riders have certain races where they always do well. For The Candyman, Durand is one of those races. He's always been a factor here, but he's never closed it out. So in spite of all the pre-race buzz about Team Cavity, you still have to run the event. You still have to wonder if there isn't someone who could stick with him and take him in the sprint. Because that's how its happened before.
The race started out with the obligatory suicide break led by Jacky Durand (LAN). Joined by three other riders they forged a significant lead in the first few miles. Eventually things picked up... and then picked up... and then picked up some more on the back side of the course. The early break was almost reeled in as the peloton made a single file approach to the largest climb on the course. The devilish part is that you don't drop down much on the other side. You lose a little elevation but then it levels out. If you are redlined from the first climb you don't get a lot of time to recover before attacking a second, smaller climb. It is this second climb where much of the damage occurs.

A lot of people were under pressure from the rapid tempo leading into this section and the succession of climbs blew about half of the field out the back. Some furious chasing led to a regrouping by the end of the first lap.

The north side of this course is known for a series of rollers. None of them will knock you out, but the repetition is not easily tossed aside. It was here that homeboy Paul Ellis launched the first serious attack. It took little time for him to open up a significant gap, and warning bells went off among the lead group. In spite of the alarm only Chris Doig and Jeremy Sartain were able to respond. The three of them hit the gas, and it wasn't long until the chase lost enthusiasm and faded back down the road. |
Don't look back; they may be gaining on you. - Satchel Paige
The three of them rolled down the road in what appeared to be the move of the day. But it wasn't so obvious that none of them ever snuck a look back. It was still early in the race, and they ate up the miles in workmanlike fashion. The next two laps passed uneventfully, save for the occasional glance over a shoulder.
It was not long after they passed the two lap to go mark that the Dentist's Nightmare appeared. Torching the chasers into a gooey mess, The Candyman set his sights on the three leaders.
|
The leaders still have a good gap, out of sight on the other side of the roller. But keep an eye on that second roller in the distance because by the time they get there... |
The Candyman will be closing in. |

So it was a group of four that entered the bell lap. Everyone knew where the best place to attack was. Where a big effort had to be made if you wanted to finish alone. Where a big effort had to be made if you wanted to keep things together for a sprint.

In the left of the picture you see the stretch of road where the race will hit the fan. |
It was Doig that engaged the sprint for the three riders that had spent much of the race together. He held it to the line followed by Sartain and Ellis.
